Quality Management System Requirements – ISO 9001

ISO 9001 is the most widely adopted quality management system, with over 1,000,000 certified systems in place worldwide.

The adoption of a quality management system is a strategic decision for an organization that can help to improve its overall performance and provide a sound basis for sustainable development initiatives. ISO 9001 specifies detailed requirements for quality management systems.

ISO 9001 has been revised several times:

  • 2015 – a very wide ranging revision of structure and concepts
  • 2008 – a minor change
  • 2000 – a major change to incorporate ‘the process approach’
  • 1994 – introduced as an international standard
  • 1987 – originally published in the UK as BS 5750-1
